April 29-30 in NYC.
Strange people, Fundamentalists,
The 2004 election tells us that socially conscious citizens need to awaken to the ambitions of this influential religious movement. What do fundamentalist theologies advocate regarding theocracy, abortion and homosexuality? What is the nature of the world order under God’s law that they anticipate? How do many fundamentalists interpret the role of Israel? How does this affect U.S. policy? Why are so many fundamentalists opposed to environmentalism and the UN? Why are millions in America drawn to this form of belief, and how can we come to understand them?
But understand them we must. There is good and bad in all people, I find. Some fundamentalists are dangerous to be sure, but so are some leftists. And none of us are perfect. Best to steer a middle course. Wish I had time to attend, but Mummy is having a birthday party in Hyannis and I am responsible for the party favors. Must scoot. More anon.

No, what Washington seems to favor in Central Asia is that increasingly familiar substitute for authentic democracy -- "managed democracy," which the web site Eurasianet.org helpfully defines as: a governmental system . . . in which the trappings of a pluralistic political society are blended with authoritarian leadership tendencies.
Hey, if it works in America . ...

Painting by Marc Chagall, 1938, from Speaking of Faith, funded in part by The Pew Charitable Trusts, female dominated enemies of the people, on public (i.e., communist) radio. Trying to steal Christ for liberal propaganda. Terrorists everywhere! Hanging Rebecca Rimel would be too good for her.

This is truly discouraging. Microsoft is, allegedly, using Alexis de Tocqueville Institution, a right wing think tank, to undermine open source, and, according to the article, they are also funding the right wing political think tanks, including the American Enterprise Institute, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the Heritage Foundation and the Cato Institute. Nothing like Strategic Philanthropy to create a better world. Never been a better time to be a Wealth Bondage Professional.
Government violence and overt repression can undermine the Brand of Freedom. Empire North provides a low cost high benefit solution. With the Eno233b ID Sniper Rifle(tm) state or corporate Security Teams can secretly implant a microchip in protesters hundreds of yards away, for tracking via satellite and personal face to face followup. Millions bought.

Don't just track what they have purchased, predict what they are likely to do, buy, or buy into. Could help form communities inside and outside the Freedom Malls and the Freedom Pens. Inside the walls of an imaginary world of information and disinformation built around our preferences, fed exactly the Brand of BS that is most to our taste, might we become a nation of Zombie Cults, like Fox Folks, only more so, in a worldview in which everything adds up, exactly? (c.f., EPIC 2014.)
I like it at the unruly margin between worlds, immersed in other people garbage, accosted by random passersby, around the wealth bondage dumpster, where the rich and poor meet by chance in a space both sacred and profane, at the boundaries of what is acceptable, a violation of the norm, with unpredictable results.

What I finally had to confront was the fact that truth alone is impotent in the face of modern propaganda techniques – as developed, field tested, refined and deployed by Madison Avenue, the Pentagon, the think tanks, the marketing departments of major corporations, the communications departments of major research universities, etc.
Sounds like a morose drunk, whose expectations have been dashed, like a broken bottle at his feet. The times are against us; Wealth Bondage is on a roll, but consider how the right 35 years ago, began to organize, from the Powell Memorandum on, from a "saving remnant," as they saw it, to a moral majority, to a Christian Coalition, to the party very much in power. Sure, we see what is coming, if the trajectory continues, but it is not here yet. If the train arrives empty and leaves full it will be our fault no less than the engine driver who is just doing his job. We can't do much, but each of us can with minimal effort or risk do a little bit more, and in aggregate that little may be a trend, or a tipping point. Say we lose. Face forward advancing beats depression. Hope is for sissies; get active. Can we who are now the grownups, get things going that will, in 35 years or less, prevail? Start with ideas; they do, as the right has shown, have consequences, then think funding, mentoring, raising up and supporting the next generation of active citizens
As for winning through propaganda, try art. Rather than sophistry and soundbites, try aphorism. Instead of slur and invective, try humor. Instead of lynching and GITMO, try satire. Instead of Plato's noble lie, try reason or Socratic irony, or the dodges of Diogenes. We are the best we got, gang, let's get in the game. We could easily be hired to work for the right as Hacks in their think tanks, or fundraisers, or pundits, or dirty-trick specialists. Some of us could go on TV with a legitimate clerical collar and preach a sermon on Iraq or torture, or Christian Charity, or the Way of the Cross. Why not freelance for the good? Each of us who gets discouraged and falls silent does a grave disservice to those who will be there when it comes to payback time. We have enough pundits, and observers, and those who take the Middle Way, inoffensive and mild, no matter how the extremes move. We have plenty of Kings, Queens, Courtiers, and Ministers of State. We need some more bar keeps, clowns, and straight men.
Hunter Thompson? I would rather be clean, sober and present when attendance is called. When Rove tallies his victories he will include the self-silenced to the left, and the self-slain. Better that someone else pay the hitman, if only with a philanthropic contribution to ordered liberty to renew civil society. It is first and foremost a war of ideas, and then the propagation thereof. The ideas suck on the right, and you have to pay people to create them. We are free, as in beer is free. We do it for love, as in a pro bono Bondage Bordello, beating sense into our fellow citizens, high and low, without even so much as a tip.
